PHOENIX – Police have released body cam footage and the identity of the suspect who died in the shooting Thursday afternoon, causing Maricopa officials to be injured.
Keith Tyler Plock, 38, said he had a prominent warrant, a violent criminal history and was known to be part of a major gang. Pinal County Sheriff’s Office.
What led to the shooting of Maricopa, where the suspect died and the police were injured?
Police said Prock left the Circle K convenience store in Maricopa before 2:50pm and when officers approached him he tried to escape.
Police said when officers chased after the prock, he pulled out a black handgun and “shots Maricopa police several times,” police said.
The second officer returned the fire as the prock continued running and fired both officers.
Two detectives arrived as backups to the unmarked car. Police say detectives sitting in the passenger seat returned the fire when the prock was hit by the car at the same time.
Prock was declared dead at the scene.
Police say the injured officer remains hospitalized and is in serious and stable condition.
Maricopa Police Station officers and both detectives were placed on paid administrative leave. This is a standard procedure.
Both officers were equipped with body cameras that were revitalized during the incident.
“This incident reminds us of the dangers our officers face every day to keep our community safe. Our department is like family, so when one of us gets hurt, we all feel that. Thankfully, our officers survive and their prognosis is positive. But they suffered serious injuries that take time to heal,” Maricopa Police Chief Mark Goodman said in a statement.
