Democrat California Rep. Eric Swalwell on Monday touted what he said was the advantage of the ongoing Ukraine-Russian war for the United States.
The war lasted three years and thousands of casualties. However, Swalwell of “CNN News Central” said that no American soldiers have died in the conflict and praised him for his perception of the positive economic impact of the war on the US economy and its geopolitical benefits. “Why should we help Ukraine, why let’s put this for your audience. Looking at the world, our biggest economic enemy is China. Our biggest geopolitical enemy is Russia,” Swalwell said. “And within three years, we destroyed their troops and the economy without losing one US soldier.”
“This has been the biggest return on investment for military spending so far, and when it comes to return on investment on soldier lives, it’s endless because we can’t split zero,” he added. “So, economically, this makes sense. And the money being spent, yes, that’s a lot of money, but it’s spent in the US to create jobs here.”
Since the war began in February 2022, the United States has spent more than $130 billion on aid to Ukraine.
CNN senior data reporter Harry Enten said in February that most Americans believe the US is overly supportive of Ukraine during the war.
“I think the real thing to watch out for here is Trendline, Mr. Berman, and just the holy Toledo. Take a look at this trendline here. “There’s too much US support for Ukraine.” When the war began in February 2022, it was only 7%,” Inten told host John Berman. “Like a rocket ship. My goodness. It went to 41% in February 2025. And the majority of Republicans, and of course, Republicans, are in charge of the US government.”
“Now, 62% of Republicans say the US has too much support for Ukraine. What a difference from just three years ago,” he said. “John, I remember all the backyards of the United States with the Ukrainian flag. They’re far less of today because Americans’ opinions about Ukraine have changed dramatically.”
When President Donald Trump worked to end the war, many neoconservative figures criticized his efforts, portraying them as abandonment of Ukraine and a surrender to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
