An employee of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) was offered the option to voluntarily resign from paying $25,000 on Friday, a source told CBS News.
Department-wide emails provided employees with “voluntary separation incentive payments.” It has been reportedcites sources that are familiar with the situation. Employees reportedly must reply to the offer until March 14th.
Thousands of probation workers, usually those who worked for less than a year, were told they would be fired in February at HHS, the outlet reported. HHS employs more than 80,000 people and oversees a number of major health agencies, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Food and Drug Administration, the National Institutes of Health, and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
The offer comes amid the Trump administration’s efforts to reduce the size of the federal workforce and reduce government budgets through fiscal cuts and massive layoffs. A process led primarily by Elon Musk’s Ministry of Government Efficiency.
More than 62,000 job cuts were announced by federal agencies in February, according to CBS. (Related: Fed workers “kick and scream” at Trump’s acquisition offer).

A week before the HHS offer, Social Security Agency employees were similarly offered a $15,000-$25,000 acquisition.
Shortly after Trump took office, more than 2 million federal workers have been offered to resign, which has been postponed and can be paid until September without having to compete in the job, CBS said. Approximately 75,000 employees accepted the offer challenged in court.
It remains unclear how the layoffs will affect HHS and its new chief, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Because they face several challenges, including the outbreak of bird flu, which leaves at least two deaths and affects the price of eggs in Americans.
