Biden-Appointed Judge Blocks Education Department From Terminating DEI Teacher Grants

A Biden-appointed judge on Monday temporarily blocked the Department of Education (DOE) attempt to cancel hundreds of millions of dollars worth of teacher training programs to promote diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI).

Litigation Estimated costs have been submitted to DOE and Secretary of Education Linda McMahon as California, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New Jersey, Colorado, Illinois, Maryland, New York and Wisconsin cancelled the $600 million grant. The state argues that grants are “critical” for recruiting and training highly qualified and diverse teachers.

“There is no clear explanation of departmental actions here,” Biden wrote, assigns US District Judge appointments written by Mayon Jun. decision. “Firstly, the termination letter lists several theoretical bases of grant termination, such as “promoting or participating in the DEI initiative,” “not free from fraud, abuse or duplication,” or “otherwise it does not serve the best interests of the US,” but we cannot identify that these bases apply here. This does not reach the level of inferred explanation. Certainly, it doesn’t explain at all. ”

According to court documents, Joun said the department’s letter that sent the department’s notice to the program of termination was “arbitrary and whimsical.”

The Ministry of Education previously announced on February 17 that it had cut grants and called training funded as “divided” and “inappropriate and unnecessary.” Training was aimed at teachers and “educational institutions” and included topics such as critical racial theory (CRT), “social justice activities” and “anti-racism.” Some of the grants were also directed towards teacher and staff recruitment strategies based on race.

Several legal challenges have already been raised against the Trump administration, including those by the Democratic National Committee. Several education groups and teacher unions have already joined forces to resist the administration over reducing DEIs and other unnecessary spending, urging schools not to comply with the order.
