Legendary Gospel Singer Huey P. Williams Dead At 80

Jackson Southern Ayers’ beloved lead singer, Huey P. Williams, passed away Monday at the age of 80.

His death marked the end of the legendary quartet Gospels. This is a music genre that has passionately lent his talent for over 50 years. Musical talent ran with the singer’s family. He was Frank Williams’ older brother, and later founded the Mississippi mass choir and Grammy-appointed Williams brothers Melvin, Doug and Leonard Williams.

“My brother Huey was in his own league in my eyes,” Doug said.

He commemorated his brother by saying, “He had a signature voice that was definitely his.”

“His Ministry of Music has been exposed to so many lives over the years. He had a great character, but with such a humble spirit. Huey was the epitome of a man of people, everyone loved and never met a stranger. According to Billboard.

“That’s why so many people across the country were drawn to him and loved him so much. His presence would be so badly missed, but his undeniable legacy would live on forever,” he said.

Jackson Southern Air was founded in 1940 and gained national fame in the 1960s. They signed with Song Bird Records in 1963 and released their breakout single “The Greatest Creator.” The band continued to release their mega-hit “Too late” in 1968, leading to the release of their first full-length album. Some of their most popular songs include “Undo your work) and “How long will it last” and “Don’t let him catch.”

The group became the first gospel act to sign Malaco Records in 1975, eventually leading to a decades-long partnership. Under this label, Jackson Southern Air regularly charted Billboard’s top gospel albums and was frequently named Billboard’s top gospel/soul artist of the year. Their many accolades included three consecutive Gospel Music Workshop of America Awards for the traditional men’s group of the year in the late ’80s, an outstanding award in 1989, and a 1992 Grammy nomination.

Their performances were emotionally charged and vented messages of faith and patience.

Williams’ true love for his skills was most obvious in his answers about when he retired from music.

“My answer to that question is, how do you give up on God? How do you give up on the gospel? “Are I going to retire?” he said, according to Billboard.

Williams’ final performance with the group was in late 2024. Those who lament his death and hope for ultimate respect will be invited to celebrate life on March 29th at Farnwood MB Church in Macomb, Mississippi.
