Republican and Iraq War veteran John James announced Monday that he will be the third Republican to join the field in Michigan’s 2026 governor race.

“Our state has been suffering long enough. Michigan is strong. Our people are strong. But we are bound by a lack of strong, capable leadership.
“For the past seven years, Michigan has been dominated by policies of radical neglect that have hurt families, communities and the economy,” James added. “We have lost over 300,000 manufacturing jobs since NAFTA. This was a third of the industrial bases. That’s not acceptable.”

In November 2022, James narrowly won Michigan’s District 10 against Democrat Carl Malinga, earning 49% of the vote to 48% of the Maringa. The victory allowed Michigan’s GOP to hold six seats. The Democrats only went ahead once, previously having an 8-6 advantage.

Five candidates since January, including Republicans Anthony Hudson and State Senator Arik Nesbitt, have announced their bids for the governor’s office. According to Go to the Lansing State Journal. Others include Michigan Democratic Secretary Jocelyn Benson, Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson, Chris Swanson, Democrat running as a Democrat, and Detroit mayor Mike Duggan, who runs as an independent, according to the outlet.
