The City of Flagstaff is seeking community feedback on Milton’s less aesthetic orientation. Planned public artwork enhances a critical gateway to downtown through creative and community-based design. The project enhances Flagstaff’s distinct character by incorporating opinions from people who live, work and travel the area.

“We’re excited to hear from the community,” said Jana Weldon, manager of Beautification, Arts and Sciences Programs.

“This is an opportunity to help many of us create something permanent and meaningful in the space we pass through every day. Publication is essential to this process.”

Through online surveys, residents are invited to give their opinions on two central themes: “Sound & Motion” and “The Story of Flagstaff.” Both of these themes highlight the energy of the Corridor and Flagstaff cultural landscape, and were developed through previous focus group discussions. Participants will assess how well each theme connects to Flagstaff, Milton Road, and whether the theme is welcome and conspires to visitors. They will also be asked to provide feedback on potential project materials and design ideas, including concrete-style liners, perforated steel, photographic images, and geological topography. The information collected leads to the final design.

“Your voice matters whether you walk, ride a bike, drive, live or work near Milton Road,” Weldon said. “The goal is to make the underground passage not just a functional part of the city, but a welcoming and reflective space for everyone.”

Milton Underground Passage is part of the Downtown Mile Project, a comprehensive effort to improve public safety, multimodal transport and rail infrastructure in Flagstaff’s Downtown Corridor.
