Memphis police arrested the man on Wednesday and accused him of stalking him after he went to Mayor Paul Young’s house on Sunday night, exacerbating the crime’s trespass and attempting to lure him.
According to a Young’s Facebook post, 25-year-old Trenton Abston jumped over the wall that led to the plot where Young and his family live.
In a Facebook statement, Memphis police said Abston walked directly to Young’s home after accessing the subdivision. Police said he had a taser, gloves, rope and duct tape in his car at the time of his arrest.
Police saw footage from public and private security cameras earlier this week after reporting they saw residents behave suspiciously in their neighborhoods.
The incident came less than two days after Minnesota Sen. Melissa Hortman and her husband were shot dead and the multiple shots of Minnesota Sen. and his wife by Vance Boerter, who was arrested after a two-day manhunt.
“In today’s climate, none of us can be too careful, especially after the tragic events in Minnesota and the threats we receive online,” Young wrote on Facebook. “The relationship between angry online rhetoric and real-life violence is no longer denied.”
The Memphis state representative expressed concern over the possibility of political violence in the aftermath.
“Residents don’t have civil servants, children, or spouses — they shouldn’t be afraid of their safety because of their services,” Democrat Tory Harris said in a social media statement. “We go beyond every line of human decency that trespasses in our (young) home and threatens his family. This is not a disagreement. It is dangerous and reckless.”
