SiriusXM’s Megyn Kelly and the host of “The Fifth Column” clashed on her show over whether President Donald Trump led the US into an official war with Iran after being attacked by the country’s nuclear weapons program.
Just two days before Trump announced a ceasefire between Israel and Iran, the president took him to the true society on Saturday evening, revealing that the United States had launched a military strike against “Iran’s three nuclear sites.” During the debate over “The Megyn Kelly Show,” the host pushed back Democrats who said Trump lacked the authority to approve the strike.
“[Alexander] Hamilton and [James] Madison disagreed anything. They disagreed with the colour of the sky, but they both agreed that the power to declare war in Congress should rest,” and “Column 5” co-hosted Matt Welch.
Kelly then jumped in to correct him. He added that the power given to Congress was to “declare war” and that “it wasn’t what happened.”
“We’re now saying, ‘Oh, well, it’s just a movement military action. It’s not war,” Welch said.
“Do you really think we started a war with Iran?” Kelly asked. “Is that what you think we did?”
Following the US strike against Iran, Vice President JD Vance said on Sunday that NBC’s “meet the media” the US is “Iran’s nuclear program” and “at war,” but the country is not war with Iran. Welch co-host Kmele Foster stepped into the debate saying he believes that the US attack on the nuclear program is “still a war.”
“Yes, they’re not Iranian people. They’re not Iranian countries. That’s not. It’s not the same,” Kelly said.
While Kelly and Welch continued to discuss the type of attack the US has made on Iran, Kelly told guests that Trump’s decision was to “prevent” further attacks from abroad as Iran and Israel have been fighting back against each other since June 12th. “This is a preventive attack. Yes, that’s right,” Welch said. “That’s not like, ‘Oh, well, 24 hours, I don’t have enough time to notify anyone.’ ”
clock:
“There’s no need to be imminent. Constitutionally, there’s no need to be imminent. No, it’s not matt,” Kelly returned. “What are your authority for that?”
Several Democrats (particularly without Congressional approval) who previously supported former President Barack Obama’s Libyan strike in 2011 called for Trump’s decision. In a Saturday post xDemocrat New York State Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez called on Trump to each, claiming the move was “a serious violation of the constitution and the power of the war in Congress.”
“That’s not my authority,” Welch said. “That’s what I think, for me, when you say you should, the fall of a bomb is a commitment to a war-like activity. And if you’re doing it, you should do it, not do it –“
“So you don’t have to,” Kelly pushed back. “I’m trying to defend the power of the president to do what he did. It’s totally stupid because these people are talking about bullet each. He had 100% legal authority to do what he did.”
Despite Ocasio-Cortez’s push to advance the perks on Trump, Democrats like Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman criticized his fellow Democrats, who told Fox News Monday that the threat to Trump was “no use.”
“I think it’s open to legal challenges. My side is losing because successive Supreme Courts have made it clear to the President a wide range of authority and the power of war,” Welch said. “But I think I’ll be honest with the intentions of the founders, including Alexander Hamilton. I don’t think he was president. [who] They should have the ability to go outside and repeat the preemptive war. They understood that having a president with the power to create such wars is a temptation to power and leads to more. I think we’ve been through this for the last 25 years and the last 50 years. ”
“What he did was try to prevent war. He tried to prevent war,” Kelly said. “That’s what he did. He dropped a bomb on a nuclear facility, which could have been able to kill us all with Intel, where they were ramping up and ready to use it.
