Nashville, Tenn. – Kilmer Abrego Garcia’s wife – from Salvador, who was illegally deported to an El Salvador prison as part of Trump’s administration’s immigration crackdown – shared a message from him. Arrest Friday morning:
“If I continue to fight, I will win because God will be with us.”
About two blocks down the street, Abrego Garcia was awaiting arrest in federal court on criminal “alien smuggling” charges, and whether he would remain in custody until trial.
Speaking to a crowd of immigrant rights advocates, union leaders and clergymen, Jennifer Vazquez Sula said Thursday marked exactly three months after “the administration accused my husband of disappearing and separating him from our family.”
It was also the first time she had been able to see him despite passing through the video screen.
Her son, Kilmer Jr., hundreds of miles away, was in Maryland with a kindergarten graduation, she said.
“Our family would never have been in this situation,” she said. “We should be with our children. Me and Kilmer’s hearts are in Tennessee, but my hearts are in Maryland with my children… My son is alone on his big day, and I am here fighting for my husband, for his father, for my husband, to get home.”
Abrego Garcia – A 29-year-old Salvador native living in Maryland, the Union Sheet Metal Worker and his dad of three were back home with their 5-year-old son when he was pulled in March. He was detained and mistakenly deported to the infamous Salvador prison under allegations of membership in the MS-13 crime gang. His family says they’re wrong. The court’s order from 2019 explicitly banned his deportation to El Salvador, where he fears persecution.
The Salvadoran government returned Abrego Garcia In the US In June, he faced a count of a major ju trial in Tennessee, facing one count of “conspiracy to illegally transport illegal aliens” and “illegal transport of illegal aliens from 2016 to 2025.”
The indictment was issued on May 21, but remained sealed until June 6.
The fee was linked to a traffic stop by the Tennessee Highway Patrol in November 2022. At this time, Abrego Garcia was handed over for speeding about 80 miles east of Nashville while driving an SUV with nine Hispanic men. Although not charged at the time, prosecutors now claim that the stop is linked to the smuggling of immigrants in the United States.
Vazquez Sula said Abrego Garcia spoke about his faith and gratitude.
“To all who continue to support Kilmer and the fight for justice, Kilmer said, “I thank my heart. God brings us together in this path and knows why he does it and what he does.”
“Kilmer shares how he feels God’s presence with him, as he knows the darkness God has faced over the past three months,” she said.
