To promote water safety and reduce the risk to the population that is most at risk of own death, the Yuma County Public Health Services District (Health District) is excited to offer 114 free swimming lessons to local children between six months and five years. This has brought the Health District to free swimming lessons for young people in Yuma County, bringing the total number of lessons offered over the past two years to 225.

“The Health District is proud to have offered these free lessons for the second year in a row and are fully committed to getting them back next year,” said Ryan Butcher, public relations coordinator for the Yuma County Health District.

“Own death is the main cause of death for children aged 1 to 4 across the country, including Yuma County. We know that learning to swim at an early age will significantly reduce the likelihood of drowning.

These lessons are designed to provide children with essential water safety skills, from confidence in water to learning basic swimming skills. “By introducing children to water in a safe and structured environment, we lay the foundation for lifelong safety and confidence around the water,” says Angenette Mosqueda, recreation manager for Parks and Recreation Department.

Swimming lesson registration will begin on Monday, May 5, 2025 through the Parks and Recreation Department of Yuma City. Classes are offered in both the Marcus pool in the morning and the Carver pool in the evening. Each class runs for 45 minutes, five days a week for two weeks, excluding national holidays.

The available classes available for free scholarships are:

  • “Guppy/Turtle” – For infants and toddlers (6 months to 3 years)
  • “Starfish” – For preschool children (3-5 years)
