Yuma, Arizona (azfamily) – Finding affordable housing continues to be a challenge for many working-class families in rural Arizona, but Yuma’s new development offers hope.
Vistara It opens doors to hundreds of residents and offers two affordable bedroom apartments. Once all project phases are complete, over 200 families can move.
Retired farming mechanic Frank Gonzalez was one of the first residents to move into Phase 1 of Vistara, which includes 80 apartments. He had lived with his sister for over a year before moving.
“I’ve lived with my sister for over a year so I can imagine how difficult it would be and I’m trying to find a place,” Gonzalez said.
He decorated his new two-bedroom apartment with photos of great grandsons.
“Some of the town locations you don’t want to take little girls with you, this is great,” he said.

Apartment developer Bethel Development Inc. said the project came to life through a collaboration between the city of Yuma and the Arizona Housing Authority.
” Tax credit allocation It’s the backbone of finance to make things happen,” said Scott Lwinger of Bethel Development.
The Arizona Housing Authority provided $25 million Federal Low Income Housing Tax Creditsecuring rents in the community will be far below the market rate for the next 30 years.
“The tax credit program is really designed to provide affordable needs for households who earn less than 60% of their household’s median income,” Rowinger said.
Yuma’s median income is around $60,000, and families who earn between 40% and 60% are eligible to rent an apartment in Vistara, where rent starts at just $600. Yuma Councillor Chris Morris said rural communities need more affordable housing and the city is working with developers to make it easier to build such projects.
“We want to provide opportunities for our community, and opportunities start with having a home where you are safe and can raise your family,” Morris said.
Gonzalez, who lives alone, said his only other option was a cheap mobile home as he struggled to find affordable housing. He feels lucky to be able to invite Vistara to his home.
“Amazing, I’m grateful,” Gonzalez said.
