$14.6 million renovation for Bartow Arena approved by UA System

UAB Blazers Set for Major Renovations to Barto Arena

The UAB Blazers are on the path to enhancing their home arena, potentially becoming one of the premier venues in the American Athletics Conference.

The University of Alabama System Board has given the green light for a $14.6 million renovation of Barto Arena. Next up, UAB will need to work out a deal with an architect to kick off the design phase.

Mark Ingram, who leads UAB Athletics, expressed optimism about the renovations: “We aim to make Bartow one of the most visible and inviting basketball and volleyball arenas in the American Conference.”

Ingram also extended gratitude to the UA Systems Management Committee, UAB’s leadership under President Watts, and the dedicated supporters and fans who advocate for UAB Athletics.

This renovation project, estimated at $14.6 million, will feature various upgrades, such as an expanded entrance lobby, a new club-level lounge, club-level seating, enhancements in the seating bowl, and improvements to the concourse, including better lighting and restrooms.

Men’s basketball coach Andy Kennedy shared his excitement: “It’s thrilling to see progress on the Barto Arena renovation plan. We’ve had a strong record at Bartow lately, and these renovations will further boost our home-court advantage.”

Women’s basketball coach Randy Norton added, “Receiving approval for the second stage of the Barto Arena renovation is fantastic. This project is a significant investment in the future of our student-athletes, fans, and UAB basketball. These enhancements will greatly impact recruitment and the overall game day experience.”

Betsy Freeburg, head coach of the volleyball program, noted that the renovations would substantially benefit their program, enhancing the fan experience and impacting student-athletes directly. “We are excited about the possibilities as we continue striving for the AAC Championship,” she stated.

Further details about the renovation project are expected to be shared in the upcoming academic year.
