Young Boozer Announces Candidacy for Alabama State Treasurer
Young Boozer, a Republican from Alabama, declared on Wednesday his intention to run once again for the role of state treasurer. This marks the fourth time Boozer has campaigned for this position.
With considerable experience in banking, Boozer was first elected to the treasurer’s office in 2010 and then again in 2014. He faced a barrier due to state law that prevented him from seeking a third consecutive term. However, he was appointed by Governor Kay Ivey in 2021 after John McMillan stepped down to lead the Alabama Medical Cannabis Commission. Boozer completed McMillan’s term and was elected again in 2022, capturing a significant share of the vote.
“We are excited to announce our candidacy for the state treasurer for the 2026 election,” Boozer stated. “I believe that my skills and extensive experience will benefit the five million residents of Alabama.”
“I am well acquainted with this office, having served from 2011 to 2019 and then from 2021 to the present,” he added.
Boozer is known for successfully negotiating a long-term agreement for the PACT College Savings Plan. He also initiated a scholarship initiative that awarded around 3,600 Alabama high school students with approximately $12.8 million. Additionally, the Treasury Department became self-funded during his tenure.
Boozer played a significant role in the Birmingham Southern College situation, particularly in 2023 when the Alabama legislature introduced a bill aimed at supporting the financially troubled university. He declined a $30 million loan for the institution, leading to a lawsuit against him, which was later dismissed by the court.
Beyond his political career, Boozer has been actively engaged in community service, participating in groups such as the Council of Councillors at Montgomery’s Church of Ascension, the Montgomery Rotary Club, the Alabama Shakespeare Festival, the Boy Scouts of America, the National Treasury Association, and Stanford University.
The Republican primary for state treasurer is set for May 19, 2026.
