Alabama Senator Gudger (R-Kalman) mentioned he is thinking about possible adjustments to the rules for the next legislative session.
Many legislators expressed frustration over local bills getting stalled in the Senate, which prevented them from being passed before the session ended.
“Clearly, we didn’t manage to pass all local laws—which was a priority for me,” Gudger shared with reporters recently. “If there’s a need to adjust the rules, I believe it concerns how we deal with local laws so that one individual doesn’t hold up the entire Senate.” He added, “There’s really no need to avoid saying what we have to.”
Gudger indicated he wants to discuss this matter with his leadership team soon.
“First, I’ll take a breather, maybe play some golf for a few days, then we’ll hold a leadership meeting to see if we need to change the rules,” he said.
Addressing some concerns, he noted, “I’ve heard complaints about treatment, but looking back, I think some members had plenty of time at the microphone. I can’t just focus on one night; it’s important to consider the whole session.”
Despite the challenges he experienced during his first term as Senate leader, he expressed satisfaction with what was accomplished this year.
“I’m excited about this session,” he stated. “We achieved a lot considering I had a pretty short runway, and the first day of the session was when I officially took on the protem role.”
