It’s pretty clear why Alabama is often called Alabama the Beautiful. Over the years, the stunning landscapes of this region have gained recognition, and locals are increasingly motivated to protect that beauty.
There are numerous organizations, both large and small, committed to preserving this natural charm, but getting involved can sometimes feel intimidating. For those keen on safeguarding an important part of our state’s natural heritage, participating in the Update the River Cleanup is an ideal way to start.

The Alabama Power River Cleanup initiative began in Gadsden at Lake Neely Henry. This year’s Update River Cleanup represents 26 years of remarkable efforts across the state. “Last year, approximately 3,400 volunteers removed around 107 tons of trash from company-owned lakes and waterways. Over the past 25 years, more than 104,000 volunteers have collectively cleaned up 13.4 million pounds of waste from Alabama’s coastlines and rivers,” they noted.
Renewing Our Rivers is among the largest river cleanup efforts in the nation, and Alabama Power benefits from substantial support from local volunteers, partner organizations, and community members. If you’d like to help, check out the cleanup schedule below to see how you can contribute to maintaining our state’s natural beauty.
