President Donald Trump is set to return to Alabama in just over a week to deliver his spring commencement address at the University of Alabama. This marks his third visit to the Tuscaloosa campus, and while many in the state recognize the historical significance of such events, some liberals are less than thrilled.
A group of Democrats at the University of Alabama has expressed strong opposition to the decision to invite Trump, voicing concerns about the potential implications of his presence at the graduation ceremony.
“The UACD is frustrated upon learning that our divisive president will play a role in the commencement of the 2025 graduation class,” they stated.
“This slight will not go unanswered. When he visited before, he turned the Alabama-Georgia game into a political affair, overshadowing the excitement of the event,” they added.
Alabama Governor Will Ainsworth dismissed the criticisms from the student organization as “childish tantrums.”
“The University of Alabama College Democrats are merely following a well-trodden path used by liberal groups at campuses across the country,” Ainsworth remarked. “It’s a privilege to have a sitting president speak at your commencement. Their complaints are quite loud but rather trivial.”
The Democrats at the University of Alabama College have adopted tactics from liberal campuses elsewhere. Having a sitting president speak at your class’s start is a great honor. Their reactions seem rather overblown. pic.twitter.com/1fyzvc2d2q

Trump will be the first current or former president to address a university commencement in its 194 years of history.
The spring commencement ceremony is scheduled for May 2-4 at Coleman Coliseum, with over 6,700 students expected to graduate.
