Cullman’s top berries: The Alabama Strawberry Festival is back

Kalman’s Annual Strawberry Festival Approaches

Next weekend, the community of Kalman is gearing up for a delightful strawberry festival, celebrating all things berry-related.

Taking place at Depo Park on Friday and Saturday, the Alabama Strawberry Festival highlights the region’s agricultural heritage with a weekend full of family-friendly activities, live performances, and, of course, fresh strawberries.

The event, rooted back to 1898, has become a hallmark for Kalman, showcasing the town’s deep connection to strawberry farming.

In 2023, the festival was officially recognized by Gov. Kay Ivey, marking it as the Alabama Strawberry Festival. Over the years, it has grown into Alabama’s longest-running strawberry festival, with many local farmers selling fresh produce, especially strawberries.

A good tip? Arrive early at the Festhalle MarketPlatz to snag a basket of strawberries before they run out.

Beyond just berries, the festival features food vendors with over 80 artisans offering strawberry-themed dishes, children’s activities, dog-friendly zones, baking contests, handmade goods, boutique clothing, and locally sourced products.

If you’re interested in something hands-on, Jason McGrass will conduct a glass-making workshop lasting about 20 to 30 minutes. Suitable for participants aged seven and up, you can create your own glass strawberries or other decorations to take home, though it costs $50 per person. It’s best to book ahead.

This year’s entertainment lineup includes artists like Russell Dickerson, Lauren Alaina, Austin Williams, and Griffin William Shelley on April 25, followed by Chase Matthew, Kid G, Sam Donald, and Graham Barham on April 26.

Ticket prices vary—General Admission is $29.99 per day, or you could opt for a two-day pass at $49.99. For a bit more comfort, VIP tickets are priced at $79.99 for one day or $99.99 for both days. You can purchase tickets online.

Both festival gates open at 3 PM with music kicking off around 4 PM.

The festival runs from 11 AM to 9 PM on April 25 and from 10 AM to 9 PM on April 26 at 309 1st Avenue NE in Downtown Kalman. And hey, admission is free!
