With just under two months remaining until the Alabama Crimson Tide kicks off their second season under head coach Calende Boer, optimism is palpable in Tuscaloosa.
The inaugural season under DeBoer was a rollercoaster ride full of ups and downs. Alabama initially secured a victory over top-ranked Georgia but then faced an unexpected loss against Vanderbilt. The regular season concluded with three defeats, capped off by a disappointing bowl game loss to Michigan State, much to the chagrin of fans hoping for a national title run.
As they gear up for the new season, expectations are undoubtedly heightened on both offense and defense. Following last year’s setbacks, fan enthusiasm has waned somewhat.
Despite that, the roster looks considerably stronger this time around. With a talented wide receiver group, Ty Simpson at quarterback—who seems better suited to execute DeBoer’s strategic vision—and a defense with the potential to rank among the nation’s best, Alabama is poised for a compelling season.
Interestingly, some of the most significant changes may be happening behind the scenes. This could turn out to be a strategic advantage for DeBoer.
When DeBoer transitioned from Washington, he brought much of his coaching staff, including offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb.
Grubb has been a key player in DeBoer’s offensive approach since his days leading the Sioux Falls team, contributing significantly to the overall strategy.
However, after settling in Tuscaloosa last winter, Grubb temporarily took a role with the Seattle Seahawks, forcing DeBoer to elevate Coach Nick Sheridan to the offensive coordinator spot. Sheridan performed adequately, but a year later, Grubb’s NFL stint didn’t pan out as hoped.
Now, Grubb is back as the offensive coordinator, alleviating a great deal of pressure from DeBoer, allowing him to concentrate on broader responsibilities rather than getting bogged down in play calling.
With Grubb by his side, DeBoer can confidently delegate the offensive game plan to someone who has shaped his career.
Out of all the new faces surrounding the program this season, Grubb’s return may very well be the most impactful.
