Christian University Refuses Large Grant Intended to Encourage LGBTQ Acceptance in Churches Following Backlash

Baylor University Returns Grant Amid Controversy

Baylor University announced on Wednesday that it returned a $643,401 grant from a liberal nonprofit focused on promoting “containment and belonging to the church” for LGBT individuals, following backlash from its supporters.

In a now-deleted announcement from June 30, the university described the funds awarded by the Eula Mae and John Baugh Foundation as instrumental in fostering “institutional courage” and understanding the exclusion faced by LGBTQIA+ individuals and women within church settings. However, after receiving feedback expressing “concerns and confusion” from its community, Baylor decided to completely revoke the grant acceptance.

“We are committed to providing a loving and caring community for everyone, including LGBTQIA+ students. This commitment aligns with our university’s mission to educate students in a caring Christian environment,” the announcement stated. The concerns raised by the university were not about the research itself, but rather the ongoing activities tied to the grant. Specifically, they noted that these activities would promote views on human sexuality that contradict Baylor’s institutional policies.

The Eula Mae & John Baugh Foundation aims to support progressive and inclusive nonprofits that embody the love of Christ, according to its website. The grant was set to support Baylor’s center for church and community impact.

The foundation has yet to respond to requests for comment. The study funded by the grant, titled “Courage from Margin: Inclusion and Attribution Practices for LGBTQIA+ and Congregational Women,” was designed to highlight the voices of LGBT individuals and women, creating a space for them to share their experiences. It aimed to guide the adoption of more inclusive language within church settings.

Baylor University did not respond immediately to inquiries regarding the situation. The university’s policy states that it affirms the biblical understanding of sexuality as a gift from God. It emphasizes that deviations from this norm, including various forms of sexual behavior outside of marriage, are discouraged. Students are encouraged to seek support if they struggle with temptations contrary to these teachings.

The university reiterated its commitment to its traditional beliefs and values, stating that its Christian mission continues to inform its academic and community practices.
