Investigations Into Brennan and Comey
Former CIA Director John Brennan stated on MSNBC that he is unsure why federal authorities are looking into him.
Brennan, along with former FBI Director James Comey, is the subject of criminal investigations concerning potential fraud associated with the Steele dossier. During an appearance on “Deadline: The White House,” Brennan remarked that he has not had any communication with investigators despite the ongoing inquiry.
“If there’s an investigation, people get asked. I’m being asked about it. But I’ve never had any contact from them. Yet, I’ve testified before numerous Congressional committees over the years,” he said. “We continue to clarify what we did throughout this process, emphasizing our commitment to our intelligence responsibilities and ensuring we didn’t interfere in that election.”
Brennan emphasized that the role of the intelligence community is to safeguard the integrity of the electoral process, rather than influence its results.
“It was a complicated time, but those who worked on this, along with those who compiled the assessments from the Intelligence Community regarding pre-election intelligence gathering, really highlighted the efforts of the CIA and the wider intelligence community,” Brennan explained. “So, I remain unaware of the specifics of what they are investigating regarding me.”
Current CIA Director John Ratcliffe has presented evidence of alleged misconduct by Brennan to FBI Director Kash Patel, based on a declassified review of the Intelligence Community Assessment from 2017. This review identified “procedural anomalies” that allowed departure from proper standards.
Brennan is also accused of making a false statement to Congress in 2023, claiming that the House Judiciary Committee did not approve the inclusion of the Steele dossier in the ICA. However, newly declassified information from Ratcliffe indicates that Brennan was, in fact, sought for its inclusion.
During a 2018 testimony, Comey admitted that he had not reviewed documents pertinent to obtaining a surveillance warrant against Trump campaign advisor Carter Page prior to the FBI’s use of them. He later informed the Senate Judiciary Committee in 2020 that he was not made aware of issues concerning Igor Danchenko, who was the primary source for the dossier authored by Christopher Steele.
