Auburn men’s basketball coach Bruce Pearl has received notable support from NBA Hall of Famer Charles Barkley regarding a potential run for the U.S. Senate.
Pearl hinted at a possible candidacy following an announcement that he would run for Governor of Alabama in 2026 rather than seeking reelection for the Senate to succeed Auburn icon Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn).
Barkley expressed his belief this week that Pearl should consider entering politics, stating he would back him wholeheartedly.
“I respect him and I trust him. I told him to do what feels right,” Barkley noted. “He’s become a big part of Auburn basketball, which is something I appreciate.”
“If he wants to run, I’m all in for him.”

Barkley, identifying as a Democrat, acknowledged that while he aligns with his party, he’s not shy about challenging them when he feels they are off course.
Recent hints about Pearl potentially entering the Senate race emerged during a Fox News interview. He reiterated, “I love my country, but I love being Auburn’s basketball coach.”
If Pearl does decide to run for the Senate, it’s anticipated he will pursue the Republican nomination.

This development positions Pearl among a mix of candidates, including Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall, former Navy SEAL Jared Hudson, and U.S. Representative Barry Moore (R-Enterprise).
For now, at least, Pearl can count on Charles Barkley’s support.
