Highway Renamed in Honor of Former Brundidge Mayor

This year, the Alabama Legislature took a momentous step, officially designating a mile stretch of U.S. Highway 231 in Brundidge as the James T. Ramage III Highway. This move pays tribute to the long-serving mayor and community advocate.

The celebration was quite the surprise for Ramage, drawing over 100 attendees, including family, friends, and local dignitaries, on July 8.

Social media overflowed with messages of appreciation, honoring Ramage’s lifelong dedication to Brundidge. U.S. Senator Katie Britt (R-Montgomery) remarked, “What an incredible honor to see Mayor Ramage recognized for her unwavering dedication to Alabama in such a meaningful way.”

State Senator Josh Karnley (R-INO) expressed his thoughts, saying, “Mr. Ramage has not only been a long-time mayor but a passionate advocate for Brundidge. The Alabama Legislature is proud to name this section of the highway in his honor.”

Beth Armstrong Milton shared a heartfelt sentiment online, stating, “Jimmy, it was an honor to be part of this special opportunity! Your leadership has always been legendary! This section of Highway 231 is truly for a special leader in Brundidge.”

The Pike County Sheriff’s Office also expressed their gratitude for being part of the dedication. They praised Ramage, noting, “Jimmy has been mayor for 40 years, showcasing unwavering dedication to bettering the Brundidge community.”

John R. Ramage remarked, “Today was special for the family. #TheMayor renamed part of #Highway231 to James T. Ramage III Highway in the presence of @GovKayIvey.”

According to the Messenger, Ramage has an impressive list of achievements:

  • Graduated from Pike County High School (1965) and the University of Alabama (1969); was active in Kappa Sigma Fraternity and Jason Order.
  • Served in the Alabama National Guard from 1969 to 1975.
  • Mayor of Brundidge from 1976 to 2016.
  • Worked at First National Bank/Troy Bank & Trust in Brundidge since 1959.
  • Named a Paul Harris Fellow by the Brundidge Rotary Club.
  • Active member of Brundidge Methodist Church.
  • Founding member of the Wiregrass Forum.
  • Chairman for several organizations, including PowerSouth Energy Cooperative and the Alabama Bankers Association.
  • Served as Vice President of the University of Alabama National Alumni Association.
