Kristi Noem Responds After NBC Host Reflects Democrats’ Concerns About ‘Alligator Alcatraz’

Discussion on Immigration Detention Facilities

Kristi Noem addressed NBC host Kristen Welker’s inquiries about the recently opened facility in Florida, often referred to as “Wannial Catraz,” during her appearance on “Meet the Press” this past Sunday. Noem shifted the focus to the conditions in Biden-era detention facilities in response to critiques of Florida’s new facility, which have pointed out issues like overcrowding and unsanitary conditions.

Welker confronted Noem about complaints from lawmakers, to which the DHS secretary contended that the facility was designed to meet the federal government’s highest standards for such facilities. Despite this, Welker interjected, recalling that Democrats previously labeled similar settings as “cages.”

Noem quickly reacted, saying, “I wish they had said that during the Biden administration.” She elaborated on the dire conditions under Biden, where individuals supposedly were crammed together on cement floors with minimal movement space. Her frustration was evident as she called for an end to politicizing the situation.

During the Biden administration, various images from immigration detention centers reflected the overcrowded conditions as a surge of migrants crossed the border illegally. The facility in question opened in July at a cost of $450 million and is set to accommodate up to 5,000 individuals, including undocumented immigrants.

Noem emphasized, “We took the camera out there. We’re going to show people what these facilities look like.” She asserted that their standards surpass those of past administrations, even exceeding federal prison conditions.

The recent bipartisan tour included five congressional members and around 20 state legislators. Following the tour, some Democrats, like New York State Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, accused the facility of resembling a “concentration camp,” while Republican attendees disagreed, claiming the Democrats were exaggerating their observations.

Schultz described conditions as “packed into cages” and mentioned alarming numbers of detainees per area. Meanwhile, Democrats expressed concerns about factors like food quality, water supply, and temperatures inside the facility, alleging they were shown a misleadingly sanitized version.

In response, Republicans such as Florida Sen. Blaze Ingoglia criticized the complaints as merely “political theatre,” asserting that the reality of the situation was much different from the rhetoric. “Rhetoric doesn’t match reality,” he stated emphatically, dismissing the concerns raised by Democrats as unfounded.
