Former Democratic President Criticized for Being ‘Very Scoldy Lately’

Obama’s Call for Grit among Democrats

Lulu Garcia-Navarro, a journalist and CNN contributor, discussed former President Barack Obama’s call for more resilience within the Democratic Party during a segment on CNN. She noted that Obama is encouraging Democrats to move past their frustrations and to embrace the principle of free speech, even when it leads to discomfort.

In a panel on “Arena,” Garcia-Navarro expressed her concerns about the tone of Obama’s recent speeches, suggesting that he has been quite critical and somewhat punitive as he urges individuals to take responsibility. “I mean, it feels like he’s been really scolding people lately. He keeps emphasizing that folks aren’t stepping up when they should, and it seems like some are just folding,” she remarked.

Garcia-Navarro noted that the tone might alienate the very voters the Democrats need to connect with. She added, “I don’t think this approach is effective anymore. We’ve seen him address the need to rally black men to support black women at the polls, but I question whether Obama resonates with the current Democratic base.”

Obama made these comments at a private fundraiser in Red Bank, New Jersey, while discussing how the party needs to regroup after setbacks in the previous elections. His statements highlight the need for a stronger, more unified message as Democrats prepare for upcoming elections in 2026 and 2028.

He emphasized, “Don’t claim to be a Democrat and just sit back because you’re feeling disappointed. It’s time to take action. If freedom of speech matters to you, you shouldn’t just remain silent. When things get tough, it’s essential to stand up for it, even when you disagree. What’s really needed now is courage.”
