Man identified in shooting of DPS officer in Nogales; facing 9 charges

The individual charged with the shooting involving the Arizona Department of Public Safety in Nogales on Sunday, June 8th, has been named as Daniel Ulysses Covalbias.

A complaint filed in Santa Cruz County Court claims that Covalbias acted with knowledge that his actions could “result in death to law enforcement officials.” The complaint alleges he used the trooper’s own gun to shoot trooper JG in the torso.

Currently, Covarrubias faces nine charges, which include:

  • One count of first-degree attempted murder
  • Three counts of aggravated assault
  • Four counts of resisting arrest
  • One count of attempting to use illegal means of transportation

If you are in the area, Nogales police have announced that access from SR 82 to Western Avenue will be restricted until around midnight.

Public Safety Agency (DPS) troopers are in recovery after being shot during a traffic stop on a tumultuous Sunday in Nogales.

According to DPS, the troopers initiated a stop near Western Avenue and Grand Avenue around 11am on June 8th. During the stop, the suspect reportedly drew a weapon and opened fire, targeting one of the troopers.

Mayor Jorge Maldonado of Nogales stated that a second trooper deployed a taser to subdue the suspect, successfully restraining and arresting him on the spot.

DPS reported that the injured trooper suffered a serious flesh wound. Though initially hospitalized, he was released later on.

The investigation is being handled by the main incidents division of AZDPS.

Authorities have closed off traffic in the area between West and Grand, as well as between SR 82 and Grand Avenue while the investigation is ongoing. Drivers are advised to avoid the area and find alternative routes.

Details about the suspect and further information on the investigation have not been disclosed yet.
