Yuma Rural Development Office will stay open, Sen. Gallego states

Yuma Rural Development Office to Remain Open

The Federal Rural Development Office in Yuma, which faced closure, will continue to operate following an intervention by Senator Reuben Gallego (D-Ariz.), as confirmed by local leaders this week.

Initially, the USDA intended to shut down the Yuma Regional Development Office due to a lease termination connected to the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) plan introduced earlier this year. However, this decision was reversed after Senator Gallego expressed his concerns in a letter, emphasizing the office’s vital role in supporting rural communities.

“The Rural Development Office is crucial for maintaining Yuma as the lettuce capital of the world,” Gallego stated. “Closing it would have seriously impacted Arizona farmers. The earlier plan exemplified a disconnect with rural communities. Thanks to our efforts and local advocates, we managed to halt that closure and preserve our services.”

Local officials echoed these sentiments, underlining the office’s significance to the area’s economy and infrastructure.

“On behalf of our community, we want to extend our deep gratitude to Sen. Reuben Gallego,” Summerton Mayor Gerald Anaya remarked. “When we learned the Yuma Rural Development Office was set to close, it was a serious loss for our town and many families. Senator Gallego’s steadfast advocacy ensured that this vital office remains open.”

San Luis Mayor Nieves Riedel also commended the decision, describing the office as a “lifeline” for both residents and businesses.

“We’re fortunate that Senator Gallego acted quickly on our behalf,” Mayor Riedel said. “His commitment to the Arizona countryside is truly appreciated.”

The USDA Yuma office hosts both the Natural Resources Conservation Services and Farm Services Agency. Over the last decade, this office has facilitated nearly $623 million in federal loans and grants for various projects in Yuma County and beyond.

Supported projects include the expansion of a hospital in Bisbee, economic development initiatives for the Pasca Ayaki tribe, improvements to water infrastructure in colonias, and housing assistance in Yuma and Santa Cruz counties.
