Former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama discussed divorce rumors during a podcast on Wednesday.
The speculations gained traction when Michelle Obama quickly left the inauguration ceremonies for the late President Jimmy Carter and Donald Trump in January. She stated emphatically that divorce never crossed her mind.
As Obama entered the room, he joked, “She took me back!”
“It was tough for a while,” he added lightheartedly.
Michelle’s brother, Craig Robinson, who co-hosted the podcast, remarked on the importance of having the couple together in person, to which both Obamas responded, “I know.” Michelle quipped that when they aren’t seen together, people often assume they’ve divorced.
Reflecting on her marriage, she shared, “I never thought about leaving my man. We’ve faced struggles, but there have been plenty of fun times and adventures, and I’ve become a better person because of him.”
“Now, don’t make me cry right at the beginning of the show,” Barack replied, feeling emotional.
Michelle also addressed rumors about her book, “Work in Progress,” from April, sharing that people jumped to conclusions about her marriage without understanding her choices. “It’s frustrating that society tends to make these assumptions about women,” she noted.
Moreover, she mentioned a past podcast episode where she expressed gratitude that her son resembled Barack Obama and that she only had a daughter. “I’m really glad there were no boys because he was Barack Obama,” she said.
