Britt Hume Questions Kamala Harris’s Viability for 2024 Presidential Nomination
On a recent podcast, Britt Hume expressed skepticism about Kamala Harris’s chances of being a viable candidate in the upcoming Democratic presidential race.
Harris clinched the 2024 nomination back in August, but there was hardly any substantial voter support following Joe Biden’s exit from the race on July 21, when he endorsed her. During the discussion with host Mark Halperin, Hume remarked on Harris’s lack of political strength and substance, suggesting that it’s hard to envision a repeat of her candidacy.
“It’s difficult to picture them doing it again,” Hume noted. “Honestly, she was one of the weakest presidential candidates I can recall… The essence simply isn’t there.”
Halperin quipped that Hume’s remarks might spark “thank you notes” from previous unsuccessful candidates like John Kelly and Mitt Romney. Hume reinforced his opinion by stating he stands by his judgment.
Halperin acknowledged that Hume’s perspective isn’t “outrageous.” He added that some of Harris’s supporters might argue she was thrust into a challenging situation, though he countered that if she didn’t think victory was likely within 90 days, she perhaps shouldn’t have pursued the nomination in the first place.
“One of her key weaknesses is her tendency to overestimate her appeal,” Hume commented. Throughout her campaign, Harris faced backlash for her responses during interviews, often accused of delivering vague or convoluted answers.
Earlier in October, Halperin had pointed out on his show that her indecisiveness might be her biggest flaw. “Looking at her history, especially her time as a senator in California and as a candidate in 2019, it’s this lack of decisiveness that people frequently note,” he said. “Public speaking demands quick thinking, especially when faced with challenging questions, but she sometimes seems hesitant to offend or make mistakes.”
During the 2020 presidential campaign, Harris also advocated for numerous left-leaning policies, including positions on fracking, gun control, and the elimination of private health insurance—positions she seemed to walk back during her current campaign.
Ultimately, she faced a notable defeat to Donald Trump in November, losing in several battleground states and the overall popular vote.
