Yuma to Celebrate Army’s 250th Birthday
The festivities for the Army’s 250th anniversary will be held in Yuma, particularly at the Colorado River State Historic Park, which served as an Army Quartermaster Depot from 1869 to 1884.
On Saturday, June 14th, 2025, this park will host a free public event from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., where the U.S. Army Yuma Proving Ground (YPG) is expected to participate. The event has been organized by park director Tammy Snook, with assistance from the Uma Crossing National Heritage Area, which has been planning for about six months.
Colonel John Nelson, the commander of YPG, expressed his mixed emotions: “I wasn’t surprised, but I have to say I was happy. We have the chance to connect with the community and showcase our work at YPG. Our workforce lives here, in Yuma, so this event lets us share what they do for national defense with their families and the public.”
Throughout the event, visitors will have a chance to interact with equipment used by elite soldiers in air operations. Young attendees thinking about military careers can talk with Yuma’s Army recruiters right after the opening ceremony, which will include a swearing-in for new recruits.
Sgt. Major Mark Mirare from YPG noted, “Celebrating at Colorado River State Historic Park is a good reminder that the Army has a long-standing history here and will continue its presence for at least another century. It’s crucial for the community to understand who we are.”
The opening ceremony will feature remarks from Yuma Mayor Douglas Nichols, who will read a declaration in honor of the Army’s anniversary. Attendees will enjoy complimentary hot dogs and sodas, along with a traditional military birthday cake to be cut at 11:00 a.m.
Additionally, Yuma County Sheriff Leon Wilmott will showcase several vintage military vehicles, among other engaging exhibits.
“This really highlights why Yuma was recently designated a Great American Defense Community,” Colonel Nelson commented. “Our history of support for this installation is significant.”
The Colorado River State Historic Park can be found at 201 N. 4th Avenue in Yuma.
