Copper Country News | Biochar kiln demonstration at Young Public Library

A biochar kiln demonstration is scheduled for Tuesday, February 21, 2023 from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm, weather and fire restrictions permitting. This in-person demonstration, which also demonstrates biochar production using a flame lid kiln, is free and open to the public.

Biochar Charcoal particles mixed with soil. Participants will learn to build and use a portable flame lid kiln to make biochar. Uses of biochar include: Soil conditioner to improve water holding capacity and nutrient availability; adsorption of pollutants for dairy farms, landfills, or mining; Production of bioenergy fuels, including syngas and bio-oil. Direct carbon sequestration (half-life of biochar molecules is 1,000 years). The advantages and challenges of using biochar are: Raise awareness about biochar. creating markets; raw material properties and variability; and matching biochar quality to specific applications.
