A glimpse inside: Lake house allure along the Tennessee River

Design Inspired by Southern Culture

In our approach to design, Southern culture isn’t just a backdrop; it’s the core of what we do. The warmth, charm, and rich storytelling traditions of the South lead us to create homes that feel layered and lived in. An ideal home must be genuine and inviting, seamlessly combining history, personality, and comfort in every detail.

This philosophy guided us as we transformed a unique lake home overlooking the Tennessee River in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. Constructed in 1987, its solid stone exterior and serene environment reflect the true essence of a home where nature and tradition meet harmoniously.

The family who lived there sought a second home that felt both sophisticated and relaxed. It’s the kind of place where wet swimsuits and towels hang casually from the porch railing, where children dash barefoot from the water, and everyone enjoys a leisurely pace. They wished to embrace the laid-back vibe of lake living while honoring their affection for classic Southern design. They envisioned a home where baking with kids after a swim or hosting dinner for clients felt as natural as breathing.

The house had sturdy foundations, with its stone and wood exterior contributing to a timeless character, complemented by a classic stone fireplace inside. However, the layout was somewhat confining, lacking a connection to the outside. Collaborating with local builder Steve Hatcher, we aimed to open up the space, knocking down walls and adding structural columns to foster a natural flow between the kitchen, living room, and stunning river views.

We also replaced the cramped, outdated spiral staircases to enhance the connection between levels with a safer and more functional design. By redesigning the guest bedrooms and closets, we managed to create inviting new layouts. Inside, we combined rich finishes and durable, high-quality fabrics to establish a relaxed, luxurious ambiance. Every detail was selected for both beauty and practicality—nothing too precious; it’s a home built for a life where elegance feels effortless. Classic elements like the original stone fireplace honor the home’s lake house charm, while layered textiles, carefully chosen lighting, and thoughtful millwork add softness and refinement.

Throughout this journey, we stayed true to the values that guide our work. This home celebrates history, feels deeply personal, and fosters connection. It’s inviting, a bit unruly, and brimming with personality.
