A look inside Maricopa County’s new animal shelter in Mesa

Mesa (AZ Family)– Maricopa County just reopened a new 84,000 square foot animal shelter in Mesa.

The new center has 346 kennels and 21 yards and replaces the former East Valley Shelter, which closed late last month. It was located right off Loop 101 and the Rio Salado Parkway.

Simone Cucurullo’s family from Arizona met with Maricopa County Animal Care and Control spokesperson Kim Powell.

“It’s more than twice the size of the last shelter,” Powell explained. “He will be spayed/neutered here. You can have your partner adopt your lost pet.”

To improve the animals’ quality of life, the new shelter includes a smaller group of kennels. Officials say the large kennels prevent the dogs from being overstimulated and keep them relaxed.
