Two California men have been arrested for allegedly impersonating US immigration and customs enforcement (ICE) agents in a social media post.
Fresno City Councilman Miguel Arias said the two were “engaged in this law.” According to Kaima. The two suspects are seeking attention online, and are said to have caused upsetting between immigrants and locals.
“On Monday, we began receiving reports from the general community that ice agents were engaged in enforcement activities in Fresno,” Arias told the outlet.
Arias learned of a fake ice agent allegedly harassing people at 11 River Park businesses between Monday and Wednesday. The two are also accused of carrying out traffic stops across the south, southwest and central Fresno. Arias confirmed the arrest of the suspect Kaima. One defense attorney called the case “a new level of stupidity.”
“I’ve never heard of it in my career,” criminal defense attorney Mark King told Kima. “It’s kind of stupid to commit a crime. Filming a crime and posting it on social media is a completely different level of stupidity.”
Arias said he suspects Fresno has been chosen because it is the capital of the immigrant community. They know that we are about to start seasonal harvests in the state.”
“Even impersonating a law enforcement officer will still be fined $2,000 in a one-year prison. If a US lawyer’s office chooses to pick it up, they could face three years in the federal system,” King told the outlet.
The defense attorney said he hopes district attorney Lisa Smitcamp will file charges in state court.
