‘Accountability is here’ – U.S. House impeaches Mayorkas with support from Alabama’s GOP delegation

The U.S. House of Representatives impeached Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas on Tuesday in a near party-line vote of 214-213.

This was the second attempt to impeach a cabinet minister, after failing to garner enough votes last week. The articles of impeachment now go to the U.S. Senate, but are unlikely to pass in the Democratic-controlled Senate.

House Speaker Mike Johnson said Mayorkas needs to be held accountable for his reluctance to secure the southern border.

Alabama's Republican Congressional delegation joined the majority in voting to fire the DHS secretary.

U.S. Rep. Dale Strong (R-Huntsville), a member of the Homeland Security Committee, said he was “proud” to join his Republican colleagues in this vote.

“Accountability is here,” Strong said. “Tonight, the House of Representatives voted to impeach Secretary Mayorkas. I look forward to the evidence being presented to the Senate and urge my colleagues in the Senate to remove Representative Johnson from office. Mayorkas has given the American people Thank you for the harm.”

Rep. Mike Rogers (R-Sachs) said Mayorkas deserved to be fired for his “dereliction of duty.”

Rep. Gary Palmer (R-Hoover) said voting for impeachment was a constitutional obligation.

Rep. Barry Moore (R-Enterprise) also claimed Mayorkas “violated the law and his oath of office.”

U.S. Rep. Jerry Carl (R-Mobile) believes Mayorkas is “freaked out” over the border chaos.

Rep. Robert Aderholt (R-Haleyville) believes Mayorkas' actions rise to the level of “high crimes and misdemeanors.”
