During a Tarrant City Council meeting on Monday night, a long-time resident voiced her frustrations with city leaders, urging them to educate themselves on local government practices. Jackie Beltein, known for her outspoken nature, took to the public comment segment to express her disappointment, feeling that the dysfunction she observed provided more insight into governance than her civic education ever did. She raised her middle finger, loudly cursing at the council members as she addressed them.
Beltein, who frequently speaks at council meetings, announced that this would be her final address before she moves away next week. She shared that she has spent years studying various government materials, aiming to understand better how her city operates and presenting her case effectively.
“I’ve learned more from you than I ever did in a civics class,” she expressed, stating that this would be her last interaction with them. “Some of you will probably be relieved to see the end of my comments.”
She mentioned that she had read extensively, including the Alabama Constitution, the Tarrant Municipal Code, as well as various publications on governmental procedures and ethics.
Ending her remarks on a confrontational note, she flipped off the council members once more before leaving the room.
Mayor Weyman Newton laughed off Beltein’s comments, seemingly unfazed by her outburst.
Beltein is also recognized for founding the Facebook page, “Tarrant Tatler,” which started as a satirical site but evolved into a platform for sharing city-related documents and addressing local concerns about governance.
Mayor Pro Tem Tracy Thredford, who is set to challenge Newton in an upcoming election, remarked that Beltein’s comments were inappropriate and criticized her manner of speaking to the council.
“Has the quality of leadership really sunk that low?” she posed rhetorically.
Beltein mentioned that her frustration was directed at all city leaders, including Newton. “I included them all in my comments. I’m not aligned with the mayor. It might be a common assumption, but that’s not the case.” she added.
