With many public water systems in the state experiencing excessive water demand, the Alabama Department of Environmental Management is asking residents and businesses to turn off drip taps when temperatures dip below freezing.
ADEM says water utilities in the state are struggling to keep up with increased consumer demand, and leaks are getting worse as frozen water pipes thaw. The public can help by checking for leaks inside and outside of their home or business. If a leak is found, the water supply must be shut off until the leak is repaired.
If there is a significant leak and the water supply cannot be shut off, customers are advised to contact their local water supplier. This is especially important in the case of vacant buildings where the water supply has not yet been disconnected.
Meteorologists predict another round of very cold temperatures across much of the state this weekend. ADEM recommends using insulating covers on outdoor faucets whenever possible instead of dripping water on outdoor faucets.
