SOLOMONS — Graham County Superintendent Paul David, Safford City Councilman Mike Andazola and former Thatcher Bob Rivera at City Hall on June 10 brought up the subject of the Solomon memorial.
Bill Brando asked for volunteers to help reinforce the memorial on the north shoulder of Route 70 near the intersection of Bowie Avenue. The ground beneath the monument has been eroded, and Brandau said he didn’t want to see the historic monument topple over and be damaged.
City Hall is located at the American Legion Lopez Hernandez Post 95 in Solomons, and the post’s leaders said they would send a group of volunteers.
However, before work could begin, volunteers were informed that ADOT would need to be involved as the memorial was located on the Arizona Department of Transportation site. That meant reviewing the work and fitting it into the schedule.
Brandau said he didn’t know anything until late last week when he was told the work had been completed without his or the Post’s involvement. ADOT workers stabilized the ground to protect the historic landmark.
“It shows that you just have to keep trying,” said Brandau.
This memorial honors Isadore Solomon, the founder of Solomon (originally Solomonville). Not only did he establish the town as the first county seat of Graham County from 1883 until he was in 1916, but he also served as postmaster, county treasurer, banker, and merchant. .
