Major improvements are underway for people using Interstate 10 in the Tucson area, with new lanes and a rebuilt interchange expected to open by the end of next year. Drivers can expect a year full of changes as part of an ongoing project to widen I-10 between Ina and Ruthlauf roads.
This is one of several major projects the Arizona Department of Transportation has planned for southern Arizona in 2024.
Visible progress on Interstate 10 began earlier this year as crews installed 121 girders on nine new bridges and concreted a reconstructed section of the freeway. Masu.
And this year, a 4-mile stretch of Interstate 10 will be the focus of major construction work, and the costs will be high. ADOT plans to transition traffic to the rebuilt highway with four lanes in each direction by late 2024. Additionally, the Orange Grove Road interchange will be reopened with wider entrance and exit ramps to promote safety and traffic flow.
The $171 million I-10 project will continue until 2025, when the rebuilt Sunset Road interchange opens. The interchange will connect to River Road on the east side thanks to a new bridge funded by Pima County that will carry traffic over the Union Pacific Railroad tracks and the Lilith River.
Throughout the project, ADOT maintains three lanes of traffic in the work zone during the day to maintain access to businesses. The public can obtain project updates and traffic alerts at: azdot.gov/i10ina2ruthrauff.
ADOT has other projects planned outside of Tucson, including:
Repairs will be made to the US 191 bridge over I-10 at milepost 131, approximately 9 miles west of Willcox. The work includes replacing girders and deck plates after a crash in early 2023 caused significant damage to the bridge. Construction is expected to begin in early 2024 and continue through the summer. Learn more about. azdot.gov/US191BridgeRepair.
Build a double roundabout in Florence. The project includes a dual roundabout at State Route 387 and SR 79B in collaboration with the City of Florence and the Maricopa Association of Governments. Nearby, ADOT will construct a one-lane roundabout at SR 79B and Florence Heights Drive. The project is scheduled for completion in his summer of 2024. ADOT has several pavement improvement projects planned for next year, including along Interstate 10 Mile near Casa Grande and SR 90 20 Mile near Sierra Vista. Learn more about. azdot.gov/project.
