Agriculture Commissioner Rick Pate declares candidacy for Alabama’s Lieutenant Governor in 2026

Alabama’s Agricultural Industry Commissioner Rick Pate has declared his intention to run for lieutenant governor in the upcoming 2026 election.

Initially, Pate had plans to enter the gubernatorial race this cycle. However, after a discussion with Governor Kay Ivey, he decided against it. He mentioned that his decision was influenced by his close friendship with U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville, who is also vying for the governor’s position in 2026.

Pate aims to continue advocating for farmers, small businesses, rural communities, and veterans.

“I’ve dedicated my life to working the land, running my business, and serving my neighbors,” Pate remarked.

“As Lieutenant Governor, I will bring the same hands-on leadership to assist President Trump and Coach Tuberville in advancing an America-first agenda, ensuring Alabama remains a place where families flourish, agriculture thrives, and conservative values prevail.”

Pate grew up on a family cattle farm in Roundes County and earned a horticulture degree from Auburn University in 1978. He worked in that field for 38 years and served as mayor of Roundesboro for 14 years before becoming Agriculture Commissioner in 2018.

During his time in office, Pate implemented the “Sweet Grown Alabama” branding initiative and spearheaded the “Thanks to Farmers” campaign to highlight local produce. He also focused on expanding the state’s farm-to-school programs and enhancing public appreciation for farmers.

He oversaw the establishment of a new pesticide residue lab in Auburn and secured funding for the Alabama meat and poultry testing program.

Pate previously served as president of the Southern Department of Agriculture Association and was a representative for Donald Trump’s RNC, acting as one of nine Alabama University Electoral Electors in both the 2020 and 2024 elections.

“Food security is national security,” Pate stated. “Our farmers are essential workers, often underappreciated, and we are determined to provide them with the support necessary to ensure food security in Alabama and beyond.”

Pate will face other Republican contenders, including incumbent Secretary of State Wes Allen, Nicole Wadsworth, and possibly Alabama Republican Chairman John Wahl.

Earlier this year, Pate reported having $134,529.45 available in his campaign account for the Agriculture Commissioner position.

The Alabama primary election is scheduled for May 19, 2026.
