AHSAA executive director announces retirement

Alvin Briggs, executive director of the Alabama High School Athletic Association, announced Wednesday that he will retire effective Sept. 2.

Briggs made the announcement at the AHSAA Central Board of Directors meeting in Montgomery, where the move was approved unanimously.

“My time with the AHSAA has been memorable,” said Briggs, who has held the position since 2021. “I am honored and grateful for the opportunity to serve our member schools and the Central Committee as Executive Director. I thank the AHSAA staff for their dedication to serving our member schools and I will miss this extended family. I am proud of what we have accomplished and am confident the AHSAA will continue to move forward and meet and overcome the many challenges that may arise in the future.”

“Well, after much prayer, it's time for me to retire.”

Central Committee Chairman Mike Welsh thanked Briggs for his contributions.

“I congratulate you on your retirement and thank you for all your service,” he told Briggs after the announcement.

Briggs, who has coached at Auburn University, the NFL and at local Greenville High School before joining the AHSAA in 2011, took over as executive director after the pandemic, succeeding Steve Savarese.

Briggs, who has spent 35 years in education, is also the first person selected as executive director to have previously served on the AHSAA executive committee.
