Airbus Celebrates 100th A220 Aircraft Delivery in Alabama

Alabama’s aerospace sector is experiencing noteworthy growth as Airbus marked the delivery of its 100th A220 aircraft from its Mobile manufacturing facility. This delivery signifies an important achievement for both the site and the state’s burgeoning aviation industry.

The milestone aircraft, delivered to Breeze Airways, showcases the impressive development of Mobile’s A220 production line.

Airbus initiated A220 production at its Alabama facility in 2019, which included the establishment of a dedicated assembly line. The success over the past five years—from the launch of new production lines to this significant delivery—demonstrates Alabama’s skilled workforce and strong aerospace ecosystem.

“Reaching this milestone highlights the commitment and teamwork that has shaped our journey,” remarked Daryl Taylor, senior vice president of Airbus’s commercial aircraft division in the US. He expressed pride in the team’s efforts.

Airbus praised the success on social media, stating, “Congratulations to our mobile team! Producing 100 A220s in just five years is indeed a remarkable accomplishment!”

The A220 was initially developed by Bombardier and acquired by Airbus in 2018. Known for its efficiency, comfort, and versatility, it has gained popularity with airlines like Delta, JetBlue, and Breeze.

Breeze Airways also shared its excitement about the delivery via social platforms. The airline noted, “We love the smell of that new plane. 100 days since its arrival at Airbus, this A220 is now part of Breeze’s fleet! We’re thrilled to be flying one of the newest models.”

While A220s are assembled in both Mobile and Mirabel, Canada, the Alabama facility is increasingly meeting the demands of US airlines.

Ellen McNair, secretary of the Alabama Department of Commerce, lauded the momentous occasion and the individuals who contributed to it. She stated, “This achievement reflects not only Airbus’s capabilities but also the strength of Alabama’s workforce. The success of the Mobile A220 line is proof that local talent and global industry can collaborate effectively.”

McNair highlighted Alabama’s important role in shaping the future of commercial aviation, emphasizing pride in the state’s contributions.

Supporting over 2,000 jobs, Airbus’s operations help establish Alabama as a significant player in the global aerospace industry. Besides the A220, the Mobile facility also produces A320 family aircraft and continues to expand, creating more jobs.

The delivery of the 100th A220 illustrates that Mobile is more than just a manufacturing location; it plays a crucial role in Airbus’s long-term strategy in the US and significantly contributes to innovation and economic growth in Alabama.
