Alabama, Auburn drop out of high school Super 7 hosting due to expanded CFP schedule

For the first time since 2009, neither Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa nor Jordan-Hare Stadium in Auburn will host the Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) Super 7 high school state football championship in 2024.

On Wednesday afternoon, the AHSAA announced the two stadiums have been removed from the hosting rotation due to the expansion of the College Football Playoff, which could add an extra home game to the Tide and Tigers' seasons.

AHSAA Executive Director Alvin Briggs, who is retiring in September, released a statement thanking the cities and universities for their efforts in putting on a great state championship football tournament over the years.

“We're grateful to the cities of Tuscaloosa, Auburn, Opelika, Auburn University, the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa Tourism and Sports Bureau and the Auburn-Opelika Tourism Bureau for their help in hosting the Super 7 since the rotation began in 2009,” Briggs said. “The experiences and memories provided to our member schools, teams, students and the community are immeasurable.”

“Hosting the Super 7 is a great honor for the city of Auburn,” said Auburn Mayor Ron Anders. “The Super 7 is the highlight of a lifetime for many young students in Alabama.”

“While the expansion of the College Football Playoff means Tuscaloosa and Auburn cannot host the event, we appreciate our partnership with the AHSAA and look forward to seeing the event flourish in other Alabama cities,” said Tuscaloosa Mayor Walt Maddox.

Briggs said Birmingham's Protective Stadium remains an option after being added to the rotation in 2021. The Super 7 has a history in Birmingham, having been held at Birmingham's Legion Field from 1996 to 2009 before moving to SEC Stadium.

Hancock Whitney Stadium in Mobile, home to the South Alabama Jaguars and numerous high school games, could be considered as a possible option to add to the rotation. Cramton Bowl in Montgomery has also been mentioned as a possibility, but the AHSAA has yet to definitively announce an alternative site.
