The South Alabama Land Trust (Salt) is passing the responsibility for one of Alabama’s cherished nature festivals, the John L. Borrom Alabama Coastal Birdfest, to the state’s prominent conservation group, Alabama Audubon.
This festival, established in 2004, pays tribute to John L. Borrom, the founder of Salt. Thanks to Salt’s efforts, Coastal Birdfest has expanded to include over 30 birdwatching and nature tours across 20 venues over four days.
Popular among both local families and bird enthusiasts across the Southeast, Coastal Birdfest offers guided excursions into some of Alabama’s pristine coastal habitats. It has long connected people of various ages and experience levels to the rich birdlife of Alabama through field trips, workshops, and educational sessions.
“Our main goal at Salt is land protection,” said Jane Herndon, executive director of Salt. “As we tackle the urgent need to preserve our land, we’ve been looking for the ideal partners to carry on Birdfest’s legacy. The leadership and community ties at Alabama Audubon make them the right choice.”
Scott Duncan, the executive director of Alabama Audubon, expressed enthusiasm about the new role. “We’re excited and honored to take on this commitment. Coastal Birdfest isn’t just one of the most awaited natural festivals in the state; it’s also a great opportunity to draw birdwatchers from around the globe to experience what makes Alabama’s birdlife so special.”
Lois Woodward, president of Alabama Audubon’s Board of Directors, remarked, “We’re eager to continue our efforts in connecting people with nature, especially along the coast. Our commitment also lies in upholding the traditions of Coastal Birdfest and enhancing experiences with birds and nature.”
This festival will now take place under Alabama Audubon’s leadership, timed with the migration of birds returning from tropical locales each spring. While there isn’t a fall festival, birdwatchers can anticipate a high-quality event similar to those in previous years.
Details about the Spring 2026 event schedule and ticket information will be shared in the coming months. For now, supporters are encouraged to check the Alabama Audubon website and follow their social media for the latest updates.
