Alabama leaders ‘celebrate the countless lives saved’ on anniversary of Roe v. Wade being overturned

Two years ago today, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the landmark Roe v. Wade decision, which established that women have a constitutional right to an abortion.

The case, Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization, was decided by a 6-3 majority of the court, with Justice Samuel Alito writing the majority opinion that effectively returned the power to regulate abortion to the states.

“Roe held that the Constitution implicitly provides a right to abortion, but did not base its decision on the text, history, or precedent,” the ruling said. “It relied on erroneous historical accounts and likely paid excessive attention to, and relied upon, matters unrelated to the meaning of the Constitution.”

Alabama political leaders celebrated the two-year anniversary of the decision.

“Two years ago, the Supreme Court restored to the people the right to protect the life of an unborn child,” Attorney General Steve Marshall said in a statement. “Today, we celebrate the countless lives that have been saved and continue to work to find ways to support mothers. Life has prevailed in Alabama.”

Members of Alabama's Republican congressional caucus also commented on the anniversary.

“Two years ago, a majority of the Supreme Court correctly interpreted the Constitution to allow states to protect life,” said Rep. Gary Palmer (R-Hoover). “We've made progress, but the fight to protect life is not over. I believe in the sanctity of human life and will continue to protect the rights of the unborn.”

“Today marks the second anniversary of the Dobbs decision,” said Rep. Jerry Carl (R-Mobile). “This is a victory for mothers, fathers, and unborn children — for all of us. Let's celebrate this incredible victory and keep fighting for a culture of life.”

Rep. Robert Aderholt (R-Haleyville) reposted a video of his comments made two years ago after the ruling was announced.

“It's a great day for America,” Aderholt said.
