Alabama Policy Institute to hold event in opposition to proposed gaming legislation ahead of public hearing

The Alabama House of Representatives will hold a hearing Tuesday to discuss a bill that would let voters decide on sports betting, the state lottery and casino-style gambling, as well as the legal form of the commission that would regulate those activities.

Last week, Rep. Chris Blackshear (R-Phenix City), Rep. Andy Whitt (R-Madison), and Rep. Sam Jones (D) announced two bills, one of which would allow voters to change the Constitution. The content is subject to revision. It will be decided in November. The Alabama House of Representatives is scheduled to take up the gaming issue throughout this week, with the first hearing to be held at the state Capitol at 3 p.m.

According to a release from Alabama Policy Institutea press conference will be held Tuesday in Room 206 of the Alabama State Capitol where various groups will voice their opposition to the gaming bill.

“Alabama Policy Institute, Alabama Farmers Federation, ALCAP, Alabama Baptist Convention, Eagle Forum, recovering gambling addicts, human trafficking advocates, addiction experts, legislators opposed to the bill, and the expansion of gambling in Alabama. Other Allies in the Fight We will hold a press conference and question-and-answer session at 2 p.m., ahead of a House Tourism Committee hearing at 3 p.m.

A two-thirds majority is required to pass a constitutional amendment, meaning 63 votes are needed and both Republicans and Democrats must agree.

The Alabama Gaming Commission was also established to regulate and license casinos, with six proposed locations (Birmingham, Mobile, Greene, Houston, Lowndes, and Macon counties).

Last week, the Mississippi House of Representatives approved an online sports betting bill that is now legal only inside casinos in the state.
