As summer approaches and the warm weather sets in, Alabama Power, which oversees 12 significant reservoirs throughout the state, is reminding everyone—residents and visitors alike—to stay safe and be prepared while enjoying the beautiful lakes and rivers in Alabama.
The state’s electricity reservoir spans over 157,000 acres of water and boasts nearly 3,500 miles of shoreline. These spaces provide a range of recreational activities, like boating, swimming, fishing, and picnicking. In addition to the reservoir, Alabama Power also manages 74 protected areas known as jam sites along the Black Warrior, Kusa, and Tarapusa Rivers, which are accessible for public enjoyment.
To help ensure a safe and pleasant experience, Alabama Power has released a set of safety guidelines that focus on various aspects of boating, water safety, and weather precautions.
Boat and Water Safety Tips:
Before you venture out for the first time this season, check that your boat’s in good working order and stocked with all necessary safety gear.
Be mindful while navigating and courteous to others on the water.
Make sure all passengers have US Coast Guard-approved life jackets available.
Avoid swimming near boats, docks, or marinas to prevent the risk of electric shock from field currents.
Stay Safe in Heat and Bad Weather:
Wear loose, brightly colored clothing, sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed hat for sun protection.
Apply sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher and stay hydrated with non-alcoholic drinks.
If a storm is on the horizon, seek shelter right away, particularly if you’re in elevated areas like hills and ridges.
Keep an eye on weather updates through local news or NOAA weather radio and be aware of signs indicating a storm’s approach.
Alabama Power encourages everyone to check out their detailed guidance in the Lake Safety Resource Guide. They also recommend downloading their mobile app, which provides further information about lake and shoreline properties.
