Alabama recognized as a national leader in important sectors

In 2025, Alabama and several of its metropolitan areas have received impressive accolades. The annual report by Business Facilities reinforces the state’s position as a competitive hub in vital industries and enhances its appeal for business growth.

This report, which has been published for 21 years, evaluates states and metro areas across over 25 categories that are crucial for site selectors and corporate leaders, concentrating on opportunities for expansion and relocation.

Among the top recognitions, Huntsville, known as Alabama’s “rocket city,” achieved the No. 1 spot for aerospace cities in the U.S. Additionally, Alabama secured the fourth position nationwide for aerospace and defense employment, highlighting its escalating role in securing the future of aviation, space, and defense technologies.

“These rankings showcase what businesses worldwide are recognizing: Alabama has the skilled labor force, innovative capabilities, and a business-friendly environment necessary to thrive in today’s economy,” commented an official. “From aerospace to automobiles, manufacturing, and advanced energy, we are just beginning to craft success stories across the state.”

Besides aerospace, Alabama also ranked within the top 10 in several key economic growth categories.

  • No. 3 – Customized Workforce Training
  • No. 6 – Strength in Automotive
  • No. 6 – Appeal for Foreign Direct Investment
  • No. 7 – Manufacturing
  • No. 5 – Nuclear Power Generation

These outcomes highlight the effects of workforce development, targeted industry recruitment, and ongoing investment in support infrastructure that sustains business success in Alabama, according to Secretary McNair.

The momentum of the metro area

The Alabama region also performed notably well. The 2025 Rankings showed:

  • Huntsville ranked fourth for the best business environment among large U.S. metros
  • Auburn/Opelika secured 10th place for small metros with excellent business environments
  • Tuscaloosa placed 10th among small manufacturing hubs
  • The Daphne/Fairhope/Foley area was recognized as No. 6 among the fastest-growing U.S. metros

Moreover, both Huntsville and Auburn/Opelika have recently received the 2025 Mac Conway Economic Development Excellence award, a national recognition published annually by “Site Selection” magazine.

“These accolades underline Alabama’s broad economic vitality, from innovative cities like Huntsville to developing coastal areas and industrial centers such as Tuscaloosa,” said Secretary McNair.

“As Alabama builds on its competitive strengths, these rankings reflect the state’s growing reputation as a place where industries thrive, businesses expand, and communities succeed.”
