Pope Francis Remembered by Alabama Legislators
The death of Pope Francis was mourned by members of the Alabama Legislature on Monday morning. Cardinal Kevin Ferrell, the Vatican Camerlengo, shared the news, stating, “This morning at 7:35, Bishop Francis of Rome returned to his father’s house. His life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and his church.”
The Vatican reported in the afternoon that the Pope had passed away due to a brain stroke, following a recovery from recent bilateral pneumonia.
President Donald Trump expressed his condolences through a post on True Society, saying, “Pope Francis rests in peace! May God bless him and all who loved him!”
Pope Francis was elected Cardinal of College after Pope Benedict XVI’s resignation in 2013. The Alabama delegation, consisting of both Republicans and Democrats, reflected on the legacy left behind by Francis.
- Senator Katie Boyd Britt addressed those inspired by the Pope’s ministry, stating, “This morning I pray for everyone inspired by the ministry and service of Catholics and Pope Francis around the world. May he rest in peace.”
- Coach Tommy Tuberville noted, “My prayers lie in today’s Catholic community, lamenting the loss of Pope Francis. His leadership, faith and service to God were inspiration for millions. May he rest in peace.”
- Congressman Shomari C. Figure remarked on the Pope’s dedication to the marginalized, saying, “Pope Francis had a commitment to stand up for the poor and marginalized. His presence and leadership will truly be overlooked when the world needs more of the humility, compassion and decency he has shown.”
- Rep. Terri A. Sewell shared, “I have participated in millions around the world to mourn the loss of Pope Francis. He was an incredible leader who had the humility, compassion and care of the people who had given him the most fortunate inspiration in all faiths and backgrounds. May he rest in peace.”
- Robert Aderholt added, “I admired Pope Francis for his unwavering support in protecting his unborn baby. I pray with others around the world for his passing, for the Catholic community around the world.”
