Tragic Shooting at Utah Valley University
On Wednesday, a shooting incident occurred at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah, resulting in the death of Charlie Kirk, a prominent far-right political commentator and co-founder of Turning Point USA. He was speaking at a lecture event when the tragedy unfolded.
Following Kirk’s death, political leaders from both parties swiftly condemned the act of violence and expressed their condolences to his family. Nearly all members of Alabama’s Congressional delegation released statements addressing this shocking event.
“Charlie Kirk was a true patriot who loved his country,” one statement read. “I appreciated participating in his podcasts and collaborating to further the conservative movement. My heart goes out to [Kirk’s wife] Erika, his two children, and the entire Kirk family. Their lives have changed forever. Please pray for them.”
US Senator Katie Britt, R-Alabama, expressed her sorrow in a statement, describing the rise of political violence in the country as a “real illness.” She asked for prayers for Kirk’s family during this difficult time.
“I urge you to pray for Charlie Kirk’s family and for our nation as they face this incredible tragedy. The loss felt by those who loved him, especially his wife and kids, is profound,” Britt remarked. “Charlie played a vital role in the conservative movement, inspiring many young Americans to engage in politics. Most importantly, he was a devoted father and husband.”
Britt emphasized the disturbing trend of political violence, stating, “It’s really troubling in our country. We need to pray for the nation.” She also called for unity and peace in the aftermath of Kirk’s murder during a press conference Thursday.
“There should be no tolerance for political violence in America. We’ve all seen what’s unfolded. It’s appalling—this was nothing short of a political assassination,” Britt remarked to reporters. “When reflecting on Charlie, his faith, family, and the influence he had on countless people come to mind.”
Several Alabama representatives also expressed their thoughts on social media, mourning Kirk and condemning political violence. One wrote, “Charlie Kirk loved his faith, family, and country. He dedicated his life to promoting the gospel and conservative values. He will always be remembered as one of the greatest conservative leaders of our time. My prayers are with the Kirk family.”
Another representative mentioned how heartbroken they were to hear of Charlie Kirk’s passing, noting his steadfast advocacy for values that unite people—faith, family, and freedom.
Additionally, US Representative Terry Sewell, one of Alabama’s two Democrats, shared her condolences and condemned political violence as well. “Political violence has no place in this country. My thoughts are with Charlie Kirk’s family,” she noted on her social media.
On Thursday, President Trump announced plans to posthumously award Kirk the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor in the U.S. Senator Britt called this an “appropriate honor,” and Senator Tuberville shared the news on social media.
The investigation into Kirk’s murder is still ongoing, with the FBI currently conducting a manhunt for the suspect.
